New Hides in the Works

I haven’t been caching very frequently, as of late.  I hope to make up for that by getting a few good hides out there.  Here’s what to expect in the upcoming future

  • Rutilus Allec (Puzzle)
  • Mission: Impossible (Multi) — A sort-of sister cache to Bond… James Bond
  • Where’s the log?! (Puzzle) — A puzzle cache at the posted coords… You’ll see the catch when you get there :)
  • A few traditionals at the Weinberg Nature Center

I hope to get these out soon so be on the lookout!

200 Finds!

I found my 200th cache today, It Begins At The Artists Gate (GC1RCKX) by childofatom.  It is an amazing puzzle cache that belongs to the group of “Dastardly Manhattan Puzzle Caches”.

My log…

¡¡¡ #200 !!! I wasn’t planning to get a NYC cache for my 200th but since I was at 198 finds and in the area for an event, I figured I might as well. This was an amazing cache from start to finish. This was my third “Dastardly Manhattan Puzzle Cache” that I solved, but my first that I found. However, it was my first “dastardly” cache that required more than research and compiling/interpreting information. Solving this jump-started, so to speak, my puzzle solving, especially in NYC. Today, they are by far my favorite cache type. But now, for the second half of the challenge, the find…

I teamed up with BriGuyNY to grab this one. After a few minutes, I was nervous that I inputted the wrong coords into my GPSr, but I checked the iPhone and they were correct. We kept searching and searching where the hint implied. At one point, we even found a spot that matched the hint exactly but yielded no cache. After reading the logs, we made another search, closer to GZ. As it turns out, the coords and hint were spot on! BriGuyNY made the find and we both signed in. TFTC SL!

The Guns of Navarone (GC12CM4)

My find rate is really low, as I almost never cache when it’s cold or if there’s snow on the ground.  I just think that I can have a much more enjoyable experience with the same cache when it’s warm.  I can appreciate the hike instead of trying to get back to the car ASAP.  However, I have been working on The Guns of Navarone as of late.  It’s a nearby six-stage multi-cache that gives you a tour of monumental cannons around White Plains.  The first five stages are all virtuals — info that is found on plaques by the cannons.  I did stage one on Saturday and finished stages two through five earlier today.  The final was close to stage five but I decided to wait, since I didn’t have my GPSr on hand.  So far, it’s a really enjoyable cache that provides historical information on nearby locations.

It’s A Small World After All…

I have ordered the container for It’s A Small World #10 – Brazil and hope to have it by Monday. Then I’ll just need to place it (in Port Chester — hint, hint for you FTF hounds) and submit. I already have the listing drafted on the geocache site. After Brazil, will come (kind of in order) Rutilus Allec (puzzle), Night Cache (puzzle), and Mission: Impossible (multi).

“I’ve learned it’s always better to have a small percentage of a big success, than a hundred percent of nothing.”

A few months ago I suggested an idea to change the favorites system.  Instead of the absolute number of cachers who favorited a cache, the % of cachers who favorited the cache (in comparison to the number of Premium Members who found it) would be displayed.

Let’s say there are two caches, Cache A and Cache B.

100 people have found Cache A and
1000 people have found Cache B.

50 (of the 100) have rated Cache A as a favorite.
50 (of the 1000) have rated Cache B as a favorite.

Both caches (using the current system) display 50 Favorites. In other words, they are “equal” in awesomeness. A new system should convert the # to %.

Cache A would say 50% (instead of 50 have favorited)

Cache B would say 5% (instead of 50 favorited)

This would be a much more accurate system in determining the quality of a cache.

The idea’s increasing popularity was very exciting to me.  In just a few months it became the  8th most supported idea on the geocaching feedback site… out of the 1100+ suggestions.

Groundspeak has approved the idea and set its status to “Started.”  The absolute number and the percentage will be shown.

This new feature will be accessible in the next release.  The coolest part of it is knowing that my idea will be implemented on the geocaching site.

CP Published!

And have a Happy New Year!

Cacheword Puzzle Submitted

Cacheword Puzzle (http://coord.info/GC2KKB8) has been submitted!  After the New York Admin reviews and (hopefully) publishes it, it will be available for searching.  Let the FTF race begin!  I will soon update the buzzy caches page to include Cacheword Puzzle.
